Sportsmanship

Richmond Ultimate’s Player’s Sportsmanship Agreement

Superior sportsmanship is one of the keystones of Ultimate. Known as “Spirit of the Game,” this sportsmanship is to be upheld by every player at every Ultimate event, especially one’s hosted by/with Richmond Ultimate.

Spirit of the Game: Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other win-at-all-costs behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players. – USA Ultimate, 11th Edition Rules

Good sportsmanship can be described as treating opponents, teammates, and staff with respect, acknowledging a job well done, exhibiting grace under fire, sharing your success with others, keeping your accomplishments in perspective and playing as hard as you can within the rules.

Poor sportsmanship can be described as any instance in which a person/team acts in an unruly manner. This includes physically or verbally hurting an opponent, game staff or official, delaying a contest in an effort to express individual frustration, berating an official, staff member, and/or opponent, or jeopardizing the competitiveness, fairness and safety of the contest and players.

Examples of unsportsmanlike conduct include:

  •      Verbal, profane fighting with opponents, teammates, staff or spectators
  •      Physical fighting or attempting to throw a punch
  •      Verbal abuse of or intimidation of an official, staff, or opponent
  •      Unsafe or reckless play
  •      Participation under the influence of alcohol or illegal substance
  •      Failure to protest in a sportsmanship manner
  •      Any other behavior that negatively affects the atmosphere or fair play as determined by the event leaders

All players are subject to the policies and laws of the hosting venue.

Fighting will result in immediate termination of the game and ejection of the players involved.

A player that is ejected from a game may not return to play in the same day and must sit out the next game that is played on a subsequent day, at the least.

All players participating in events led or sponsored by Richmond Ultimate are expected to exemplify good sportsmanship at all times. Displays of poor sportsmanship by any player as determined by the event staff (i.e., League Commissioners) or a Richmond Ultimate Officer are subject to punishments, which may range up to dismissal from the event without refund.
All players must agree to these terms to be permitted to participate in the event.
